Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court this morning, and Google has warned its US employees that they may leave the country without explanation.

The Supreme Court announced a new decision on Friday morning ending the federal government’s protection of Americans’ right to an abortion and handing that power up to the states. In response, some states have trigger bans ready, which will make abortions illegal there in the coming days or sometimes right away.

According to The Verge , Google’s chief people officer Fiona Cicconi addressed an email to all American staff members in response to that decision, outlining the ways in which the corporation can benefit both its employees and the general public.

Google’s healthcare coverage are equipped to pay for out-of-state medical procedures for employees and their family. The employer also permits employees to move to a different state without providing any justification. Whether this relocation policy is new or already in place is unclear at this time.

The message also expresses Google’s desire to respect users’ privacy while providing easy access to information on reproductive healthcare.

Hello everyone
The US Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade in its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization this morning.

This is a major shift for the nation that has a significant impact on many people, particularly women. Everyone will react in their own manner, whether they want time and space to digest, to speak up, to volunteer outside of work, to avoid the topic altogether, or in some other way entirely. Please respect one another at all times and be considerate of how your coworkers may be feeling.

Our organization places a high value on equity, and we are both concerned about the effect that this decision will have on people’s careers, lives, and health. In addition to continuing our efforts to safeguard user privacy, we will maintain working to make information on reproductive healthcare available across all of our products.

Our US benefits plan and health insurance cover out-of-state medical procedures that are not accessible where an employee lives and works in order to support Googlers and their family. Those in charge of this process will be aware of the situation, and Googlers may also petition for relocation without cause. In the upcoming days, we will set up support meetings for Google employees in the US. They’ll be published on Google News.
In the days to come, don’t be afraid to turn to your Google community for support and keep looking out for one another.
