The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 kernel source codes have been made available by Samsung. On its Open Source website, the business only recently posted the kernel sources for the newest foldables. The original releases of the gadgets were for US carriers. The firmware versions for the two foldables are represented by the builds, F936USQU1AVGA and F721USQU1AVGA, respectively.

Samsung releases the Galaxy Z FOLD 4 and FLIP 4’s kernel source codes. Built on top of the Linux kernel, Android is an open-source operating system. Device makers can now customize the operating system for their products, adding additional features on top of the base Android OS. For instance, Samsung includes its own One UI software with its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. However, because the platform is open-source, OEMs are required to make all Linux kernel binary source codes available to the public. Samsung has officially made kernel sources available for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 almost a month after the devices’ launches.

Kernel sources give programmers the ability to change the code to enable new features and functionalities that aren’t present in the official builds. These lead to the creation of unique ROMs like LineageOS, which are very useful to users. Along with new features, users can access the most recent Android versions via custom ROMs long after official software support ends. For instance, long-retired Samsung Galaxy S7, S8, and Galaxy Note 8 phones just received Android 13 with LineageOS 20, considerably earlier than devices like the Galaxy S22 and the upcoming foldables.

Advertisement Naturally, these aftermarket upgrades need a bootloader that can be unlocked, which is not a feature of Samsung devices in the US. In the United States, Galaxy devices have a bootloader that is locked down. However, the business permits bootloader unlocking for its products in foreign regions. So, to provide new opportunities, developers can experiment with the kernel sources for Galaxy phones. To add new features or improve already-existing features, they can modify source codes.
