In addition to preparing to perform a new test using self-driving trucks to carry furniture to homes, Alphabet Waymo is urging California to lift its prohibition on the vehicles.

HOME FURNITURE WILL BE DELIVERED BY WAYMO THROUGH WAYFAIR Waymo will work with JB Hunt Transport Services on a six-week test over some of July and August. Waymos autonomous semi-trailer vehicles will transport cargo along routes in Texas as part of the test.

Particularly, Wayfair, a major online retailer of home furnishings and a client of JB Hunt, will receive deliveries using Waymos trucks.

Waymos Class 8 trucks will transport goods between factories in Houston and Dallas via Interstate 45. The trucks will operate independently when they are moving, but they will always have a commercially licensed driver and a Waymo engineer inside the cab.

WAYMO AND OTHERS WISH FOR CALIFORNIA TO RELEASE ITS TRUCKS BAN While Waymo Via, its efforts in goods delivery, continue to advance, the business is up against a technological hill in California.

Waymo is among 35 businesses urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to overturn the state’s restriction on autonomous semi-trailer trucks, according to The Verge . The letter is signed by several well-known companies, including Waymo, Aurora, TuSimple, Embark, UPS, Volvo, and Uber Freight.

According to the letter, the ban puts California’s competitive advantage at jeopardy. In it, it is explained:

California runs the danger of losing its competitive edge in the absence of rules allowing this technology. Investment is restricted to other states that permit the deployment of autonomous trucks as the sector rolls out new pilot programs, develops crucial infrastructure, and produces the jobs of the twenty-first century California’s businesses need to expand.

The initial enabling legislation from 2012 has been in existence for ten years now, and during this time, there has been no advancement toward autonomous transportation regulation. We are now pleading with your Administration to launch a methodical regulatory procedure that offers autonomous trucks a chance to benefit California and Californians and turns our state into the global epicenter for the technology that will shape the future of transportation.

Since a few years ago, California has permitted self-driving car and light-duty truck programs. For some time now, Waymo has been operating its driverless vehicles in San Francisco.

However, the State’s regulations prohibit any car or truck weighing more than 10,001 pounds, thereby limiting the majority of delivery trucks, buses, and other large vehicles. According to existing regulations, only Class 1 and Class 2 trucks—which include automobiles like minivans, pickup trucks, and utility vans—are allowed.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles responded to the letter by stating that although regulations for autonomous vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds are being developed, there is presently no schedule for their implementation.
