The camera is the main reason why the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is already proving to be a significant advance to Samsung’s flagship foldable. A recent report claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will even outperform one of the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s telephoto lenses.
The completed camera system for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 includes a 50MP primary camera supported by two 12MP sensors, one for ultrawide and one for telephoto, according to Ice Universe, a reputable source for forthcoming Samsung goods. This confirms earlier speculations, and it’s especially encouraging to see Samsung making the switch to a 50MP main sensor.
The fact that the Fold 4 might actually outperform Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra in at least one category, though, may come as a bigger shock. Ice says claims that the telephoto camera in the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is more powerful than the corresponding lens in the S22 Ultra, despite the fact that the four-lens S22 Ultra will surely give the overall better camera. This specifically refers to the 3x lens rather than the 10x periscope lens that the Fold lacks but the S22 Ultra has.
It’s unclear exactly what this means, but we might guess that Samsung has improved the optics or software processing of their 3x lens. Regardless, it sounds like the telescopic camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will provide good results.
Additionally, given where the Fold 3 is at, this is fantastic news. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 pretty completely failed when it came to shooting at a distance during a picture shoot we conducted earlier this year with other Android flagships. For longer photos, the Galaxy S22 Ultra and even Google’s Pixel 6 Pro destroyed the Fold, but adding a stronger 3x telephoto lens in place of the 2x lens will be a welcome upgrade.
