One of the brand’s newest foldable phones is the Huawei Mate Xs 2. It pretty much differs significantly from anything else on the market. This was my first time using an outwards-folding Huawei phone because I hadn’t had a chance to utilize the Mate X or Xs. Having said that, I was nonetheless surprised by this phone. I thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the Huawei Mate Xs 2 despite the fact that it is far from perfect and stands in stark contrast to the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

You could be perplexed by the final clause in the preceding phrase. Why is it so different from the Galaxy Z Fold 4 despite the fact that both devices are foldable and can convert into huge smartphones from tablet sizes? That is accurate, yet they fold in different directions and have a very distinct feel in the hand. I was pleasantly surprised by the Mate Xs 2 in a number of ways, and you might be as well. Of course, it has advantages and disadvantages, so let’s look at them now. If you want to learn more about the Huawei Mate Xs 2, continue reading.

The Huawei Mate XS 2 is unique, but that isn’t always a bad thing. This folds outward, in contrast to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the majority of other large foldables available. In other words, when it is folded, about half of its display is on the back. Many would argue that this is not ideal because everything is exposed and you may easily pick up scratches. That is true, yet there are advantages to this. When compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is a LOT slimmer. This phone has a folded size of 11.1mm and an unfolded size of just 5.4mm.

Why is that crucial? The device is incredibly thin when it’s unfolded, and when it’s folded, it feels like a typical, sizable smartphone. It is about the same thickness as a huge phone with a case. Additionally, despite the fact that it folds outward, holding it in your hand doesn’t provide the same sensation as holding a foldable phone. You hardly feel the two sides of the phone touching on the sides at all because the sides are beautifully curled and one section of the phone connects to the strip on the rear.

When using the Huawei Mate Xs 2, it actually feels like you’re using a regular phone because it’s so thin “>

Advertisement To be completely honest, this is what shocked me the most. I didn’t really anticipate that using it when folded would be similar to using a standard phone. When it comes to foldables, that is how it should be. You’ll need to push a specific, physical button on the back of the device to unfold it. The phone detaches from the rear at that moment, allowing you to unfold it. When using foldables that fold the other way, the unfolding and folding process is more fluid. Don’t get me wrong; it doesn’t feel cheap or anything of the sort, but it takes more effort and lacks the pleasant snap of a Galaxy Z Fold 4 or an OPPO Find N, for example. Additionally, you can unfold the device from a variety of angles, albeit you are limited in how far you can move.

IN THE HAND, IT FEELS PREMIUM.

The phone has a really good overall design and feels high-end in the hand. On the right side of the phone’s rear, there is a strip that sticks out. The cameras and other hardware parts are located there. This not only provides you with an excellent hold on the phone, but it also serves as the location for the docking station when folded. To be very honest, I truly appreciate this solution. The design therefore includes advantages as well as disadvantages. The majority of its drawbacks can be mitigated by applying a case, which takes us to our next subject.

Advertisement The case that is included is attractive and surprisingly functional. A case is included with the Huawei Mate Xs 2. Given everything, the soft silicone case is actually quite pleasant. A device like this is challenging to justify because it unfolds from the back. The right side of this cover does, in fact, securely latch onto the phone, leaving the left side open for future use. It quickly separates from the gadget so you can unfurl it.

But when used regularly, it shields the gadget completely. The sides are raised, but portions of the top and bottom are exposed. The most crucial factor is that both the left and right sides be completely protected. While using the phone without a case is possible, it’s not necessarily a good idea. Although that screen does have a coating that should offer some additional protection against scratches, you’ll still be setting a display on the table and who knows what other surfaces on a regular basis.

THE DISPLAY DEPARTMENT DOES NOT HAVE A LOT TO COMPLAINT ABOUT The Huawei Mate Xs 2 has a display that can be folded into a smaller one and is incredibly huge. There is only one display included with this foldable, not two. This is a sizable 7.8-inch 2480 x 2200 Foldable OLED display that you are getting. This 120Hz display has a 1 billion color projection capacity. It unfolds into a 6.5-inch monitor with a 2480 x 1176 resolution. Is this display any good, you ask?

In terms of image quality, it is, indeed, really, really good. The viewing angles are good, and the colors are vivid. Excellent touch sensitivity is also present, and the 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling incredibly fluid. I did note that, when used outdoors, the display is not as bright as some other typical flagship smartphones. Do not misunderstand; it is bright enough, but it does not reach the crazily high levels that some normal phones do.

Advertisement THE screen protection occasionally annoyed me When swiping from the right while holding the phone folded, you’ll also feel the screen protector on the side. When it is unfurled, that is not as noticeable. This irritated me a little bit, but it has to be that way. Avoid attempting to remove that layer from the device. It is not at all a typical screen protector, and removal is not recommended. But after I grew used to it, I didn’t care about it at all. Additionally, this won’t be a problem at all if you want to use the on-screen buttons.

Regarding this show, there isn’t anything to criticize. I had to make a minor criticism, but you probably won’t have any, either.

The performance of the Huawei Mate XS 2 is incredibly smooth. The Qualcomm technology in the Huawei Mate Xs 2 isn’t exactly the newest and finest. It incorporates Qualcomm’s flagship SoC from the previous year, the Snapdragon 888. Additionally, it lacks 5G, all due to the US embargo. Does that, however, impact the performance? Well, not really, no. The phone handled everything I threw at it with ease, even some games I downloaded from the AppGallery.

Tasks that are commonplace and everyday are also no trouble. There were some stutters in daily performance that I did notice, but that is to be expected. Almost every phone has it, however it doesn’t happen as frequently. In all respects, the phone worked flawlessly. When I was gaming, it did get considerably warm, but when I was using it in general, it was not a problem; it mostly stayed cool.

SERVICES FROM GOOGLE DO NOT COME PRE-INSTALLED The tablet does arrive with Android 11 pre-installed, not Android 12. Over it is EMUI 12 installed. Be aware that because Google services are not available in the US, the phone only comes with Huawei services and not the Google Play Store.

Advertisement Better battery life is possible. A 4,600mAh battery powers the gadget in its global edition. However, the top-tier model in China does come with a 4,880mAh battery. To be completely honest, the battery life wasn’t that fantastic while we were using it. The phone does have a display that is genuinely huge and stays large even when folded. The results weren’t all that impressive given its resolution and rapid refresh rate.

I had to charge the phone before going to bed on days that were busier. I managed to prevent it on days when I used fewer resources. I was spending between 4 and 5 hours per day staring at a screen, which is not great in my book. Usually, it was closer to four. Since it is so thin in that form and is such a pleasure to use, the truth be told, I did use the phone unfurled whenever I could. Therefore, if you concentrate more on the folded form, you might be able to gain a longer battery life. But keep in mind that the standby time is actually fairly good.

THE INCLUDED CHARGER CHARGES THE PHONE EXTREMELY FAST

The phone does, however, come with quick charging that is indeed fast. You can charge to 85 percent with the bundled 66W charger in about 30 minutes. Between 40 and 45 minutes were needed to fully charge the battery. That is obviously extremely quick. Therefore, even if you do accidentally drain the battery too much, all that is required is a short top-up. But keep in mind that wireless charging is not included.

The cameras are decent but not outstanding. Three cameras are on the back and one is on the display of the Huawei Mate Xs 2. An 8-megapixel telephoto camera and a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera support a 50-megapixel primary camera. On the front, a 10.7-megapixel camera is located. Having said that, how effective are the cameras? Well, they’re good, but they’re not the greatest Huawei has ever produced, at least not by a long shot.

THE PHONE OCASIONALLY HAD WHITE BALANCE PROBLEMS Most pictures turned out to be very attractive and well-balanced. I did see that the white balance does occasionally go awry in images taken in the daylight, and that the phone occasionally tends to overexpose objects in dim light when lights are present in the scene. The colors actually turn out to be really pleasing, and it’s fascinating to see that the ultrawide camera can occasionally produce a more saturated image than the primary one. The usual situation is the reverse.

The majority of the time, THE IMAGES DO LOOK REALISTIC. The photographs do appear realistic; the phone doesn’t frequently turn up the saturation. It does have a 3x optical zoom that is effective. The front-facing camera is adequate but not particularly noteworthy. To be honest, I fully anticipated this. Although I’m not sure how much it mattered, Leica is no longer a part of the picture. Occasionally, I also found that the sides of some photos were warped. Foldable smartphones typically fall short of brands’ traditional flagship models, and the same is true here. In contrast, I liked the photography results from the Huawei P50 Pro more.

Excellent and adaptable speakers

The dual speakers on the Huawei Mate Xs 2 actually balance the sound based on whether the phone is folded or not. When you alter the direction, it will change channels, which is a thoughtful touch from Huawei. These speakers offer excellent sound quality overall. They are quite audible and audible enough. The voices are also extremely clear, and the bass end is superb. The mids are adequate, and the highs are likewise excellent. The sound is good overall.

NO AUDIO JACK IS AVAILABLE HERE Unfortunately, the audio jack that several of you were expecting for is not included in the box. If you want to utilize wired headphones, you must rely on the Type-C connector at the bottom. As an alternative, you could use Bluetooth 5.2. (A2DP, LE). For the sake of this evaluation, I used a Bluetooth connection, and it was faultless. I connected my smartwatch and earbuds with it.

EMUI 12 IS PRE-INSTALLED WITH ANDROID 11 The Huawei Mate Xs 2 comes pre-installed with Android 11 and EMUI 12. The worldwide model is the same. HarmonyOS is a component of the Chinese model in China. Having said that, Google services are not included with the phone. Huawei is unable to use Google services or applications as a result of the US embargo. The device does include an app store, HMS, and Huawei’s own services (AppGallery).

OVER THE YEARS, APPGALLERY MADE HUGE PROGRESS Since its debut, AppGallery has grown significantly. Available are a ton of apps there, and the number continues expanding. But don’t anticipate finding everything you would on the Play Store. The good news is that Huawei will also recommend programs from app repositories, making it simpler for you to install them. Of course, it’s not as efficient as having them in the AppGallery. Aside from Google’s, practically all sideloaded apps should function without issue, at least from what we’ve tested.

EMUI 12 IS VERY FLUIDS. The software is easy to use and truly gives the impression of being a cross between Android and iOS. The EMUI 12 launcher does not include an app drawer. I’ve looked for the option to change to it but haven’t been successful. It’s either not there or I’m blind. Tell me if you do discover it. Additionally, quick toggles are available when you swipe down from the top-right side, while notifications are displayed when you swipe down from the top-left side. There isn’t a double-tap to lock function, there is limited customizability, etc. EMUI 12 is likewise really vibrant. Although it won’t appeal to everyone, it works really effectively.

” alt=”AH Hauwei Mate Xs 2 picture 91 THE HUAWEI MATE XS 2 IS DIFFERENT, IN A GOOD WAY, BUT NOT FOR EVERYONE “>

What is the final verdict then? Is the price for this phone reasonable? The answer to that will depend on your budget and the features you want in a phone. This phone is for you if you really want a foldable that, when folded, feels like using a smartphone and that also folds outward. No other equipment that is widely accessible can duplicate this. Comparable in terms of thinness and folding the other way, the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 is now only available in China.

On the other hand, if you desire good battery life and can’t live without Google apps and services, you might want to seek elsewhere. Although the Huawei Mate Xs 2 is a fantastic gadget, not everyone will enjoy using it. However, it seems that practically all foldables share this characteristic. You are in charge. The phone undoubtedly has advantages, but there are also drawbacks.
