Over 500 million people are currently using RCS messaging, Google said today at Google I/O 2022, and the company used the occasion to take another shot at Apple.

Google said that there are presently over 500 million RCS messaging users worldwide during the Google I/O 2022 Android session. Google is specifically referring to monthly active RCS users, namely those using the Google Messages app.

The more interesting part of this announcement, though, may have been Google’s very blatant jab at Apple for continuing to ignore RCS as a replacement for SMS messages on the iPhone. In particular, Apple’s iMessage has dominated texting in the US, although it is still entirely exclusive to iOS and still reverts to SMS when sending messages to Android smartphones.

Google highlights the following:
We wish that RCS will soon be available on every mobile operating system. So, regardless of the device you’re using, your messages are private.
