The Pixel 6a, which serves as the entry-level model in the Pixel 6 series and is powered by the company’s flagship Tensor processor, was formally introduced by Google during the annual I/O Developer conference period.

To help with entry-level price, the huge 6.1-inch tablet has a number of hardware upgrades, but it still has the same premium look as its flagship brothers, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. An aluminum frame made from recycled materials and a polycarbonate backplate are used instead of glass and metal. The side rails are a step down from the Pixel 6 series and are matte black.

The front of the Pixel 6a features a 2,340 x 1,080-pixel FHD OLED display that can only operate at 60 frames per second. It’s also important to note that this is the first inexpensive Google phone to come equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner for biometric security. The screen is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, the same coating that was used on the Pixel 5a from the previous year.

The Pixel 6a has Google’s premium Tensor processor despite being introduced as a mid-range alternative to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. The Titan M2 security coprocessor, which is also found in the flagship models, making the Pixel 6a one of the most secure Android phones currently on the market.

Tensor includes a 4,306mAh battery with support for quick charging, 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage. When using the Extreme Battery Saver option, Google claims that a single charge can last up to 72 hours. For the first time on a Pixel A-series model, a 3.5mm headphone connector is regrettably not available. For moisture protection, there is an IP67 water and dust resistant rating present.

The main 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN1 sensor used in the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro is significantly outclassed by the rear camera arrangement. We believe the Sony IMX363 and IMX386 to be the 12.2 megapixel wide-angle and 12-megapixel ultra-wide cameras, respectively. An 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 selfie camera is housed in the punch-hole notch in the middle of the front of the device.

The Pixel 6a also features a number of first-time Tensor processor-based modes for the first time, such as Magic Eraser, Real Tone, and Face Unblur. Here, it is still able to capture 4K video at 30 and 60 frames per second, as well as 1080p video at 30 and 60 frames per second. At 240 frames per second, 1080p slo-mo video can be captured. The highest resolution and framerate for the selfie camera are both 1080p and 30fps.

For the Pixel 6a, Google has committed to 3 years of Android updates and a total of 5 years of security updates . This indicates that the 2022 Made by Google smartphone’s support window will end somewhere in 2027.

The Pixel 6a will be available for $449 on July 21 directly through the Google Store or in physical stores on July 28. It comes in three colors: black, mint green, and gray/silver. At first, only the US and Japan will be accessible, with a delayed launch anticipated for Australia, Canada, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, the Republic of Ireland, Spain, and Singapore.
