With the Pixel 5a and Pixel 6 series, Google discontinued their cloth cases, and it appears the replacement is here to stay. The Pixel 6a will receive a set of somewhat uninteresting official cases, similar to last year’s range.

Google has announced that its plastic cases will return for the Pixel 6a, as shown above, even though they haven’t yet arrived on the Google Store . Similar to the Pixel 6 from a year ago, it looks Google will make one case for the Pixel 6a’s three colors—translucent green, black, and white.

With a dual-layer design, Google’s current Pixel case highlights the phone’s aesthetic while providing protection. The casings are also manufactured from post-consumer recycled plastic, accounting for about 30% of the final product, in keeping with Google’s customarily environmentally conscious view on products. The Pixel 6a’s price will probably be in the $30 range if it follows the same path as the flagship versions.

The fact that Google is keeping this case design for the Pixel 6a is not at all surprising, although it is somewhat sad. These cases feel quite generic, as we noted in our review of the Pixel 6 Pro from the previous year.

The plastic shell looks well with the design and is a good fit for the Pixel 6 Pro (not too tight, not too loose), but it has a generic feel. Although I doubt it would provide significant drop protection, it does provide the required grip. I wished Google had preserved its distinctive cloth casings and let outside designers handle these standard designs. Alternately, just create both.

The fact that these examples don’t age well only makes the issue worse. Finding accounts of the cases discoloring or the frosted texture fading after only a few weeks of use is easy on Reddit and other online forums.

Hopefully, the Pixel 7 will bring about a shift.
