According to DIGITIMES Research senior analyst Jim Hsiao for the Notebook Tracker, Apple is anticipated to diversify its MacBook production in China rather than putting all of its eggs in one basket.

Apple’s shipments in the second quarter of 2022 were substantially hampered by the COVID lockdowns in eastern Chinese towns. According to Hsiao, who cited his sources, Quanta Computer, which produces about 60% of Apple’s MacBooks at its plant in Shanghai, is anticipated to move some of the production to its plant in Chongqing, western China.

For Apple, Quanta manufactures the 14.2 and 16.2 inch MacBook Pro as well as the 13.3 and 13.6 inch MacBook Air.

The remaining 40% of Apple’s Mac orders are handled by Foxconn Technology Group (Hon Hai Precision Industry), which produces the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and 13.3-inch MacBook Air at its facility in Chengdu, western China.

Foxconn received a significantly higher percentage of orders, despite the fact that MacBook shipments from Quanta’s Shanghai plant were severely hampered by the COVID-19 lockdowns in the second quarter.

Apple will gradually transfer orders for the 13.3-inch MacBook Air from the two ODMs to Wingtech, a Chinese company, in the second half of 2022. Wingtech will manufacture the devices at its plant in Kunming, southwest China. According to Hsiao, Apple plans to have Wingtech produce 5% of its MacBook products in 2022 and 10% in 2023.

In the end, Apple wants Quanta to supply 55% of its MacBook shipments, Foxconn to supply 35%, and Wingtech to supply 10%.

However, Apple’s fundamental corporate objective continues to be shifting some production outside of China. Long-term plans call for Foxconn to start producing MacBook goods at its Vietnam facility, which will also produce iPads.
