You've got the goldeneye kid...

Back when the Nintendo64 was still putting up a fight against the original Sony PlayStation, me and all my nerdy friends used to play a game based on the James Bond movie GoldenEye. It came out right as I was going away to art school, and we spent many late nights playing the first real 4 player shoot'em up. Seriously...we were obsessed.

The game was so good, and so popular that we played it well after the Nintendo64 had pretty much ran it's course. Even when all the best games where being made on "Compact Discs" we still plugged in that clunky cartridge and had the times of our dorky lives shooting each other. The game is considered by most gamers to be a classic.

With The Nintendo Wii's super successful "virtual console" (a part of the Wii that allows you to buy and download classic games from years gone by... Like The Original Zelda!) everybody's been asking when GoldenEye will make it's triumphant return to the Nintendo. Well it's complicated.

The company that made GoldenEye, Rare, was bought by Microsoft. They're dealing with their own next-gen console the Xbox360. So the possibility of them being really, really nice and letting Nintendo have the rights to GoldenEye looked pretty slim. Honestly, could anyone blame them for not helping the competition?

However, recently the President of Nintendo America went on the record as saying:

"Suffice it to say we would love to see [GoldenEye on Virtual Console], so we're exploring all the rights issues."

as well as:

"the pain is worth the gain"

wow... Game Companies are actually listening to their customers and are trying to give us what we want? To their credit, Microsoft has fully supported Nintendo's handheld system the DS. And with Sony being such jerk faces, Microsoft has actually been looking like the good guys lately. So maybe this'll actually happen!

I can kick your ass at Goldeneye. I'm serious. If the devil ever challenges me to a competition - I will choose Goldeneye.

I remember playing with the original Dad's founders over at Sean's and George became so frustrated he turned to myself and Dave Keeton and said "Playing against you two is like playing against Darth Vader and the Emperor." Dave made it clear which one of us was the Emperor by saying "Should I destroy him, my master?" He called me "My Master" for far longer than was comfortable after that (years).

I opened up every openable on that cartridge (including INVINCIBILITY - no small feat), without using any cheat codes. In fact the cheat codes for the game were such a well guarded secret that they weren't officially released (or leaked) until years after the game's unveiling (I believe an unheard of precedent in the world of cartridge games). Did you know you can turn invisible during multiplayer? TRUE.

Anyway, I can kick your ass.

what JL said is totally true. I don't even know him, but I know what he's saying is totally true. You know why? From the stories...that are still being told.

I forget which exact sign of the apocalypse this is.. was it before or after the plague of locusts?

In any case, I loved that game, but never actually got all that good at the multiplayer. Perhaps it had something to do with my tendency to select Boris and run around like a dork shouting "SLUG HEAD!" and "I AM INVINCIBLE!!" until someone put me out of my misery. Much like real life.

I've actually heard legend and lore about Joseph's near metahuman abilities in Goldeneye.

In fact, Matt once told me he was convinced Joseph would lock himself away for the first week he had gotten any new game. As to master it, before unleashing his skills upon his unsuspecting friends.

Plus I played magic with you guys twice and it was fucking brutal.

Just to be clear - I was NEVER actually invisible when we played. I didn't even find out you could turn invisible until after I had moved to California. They kept that a well guarded secret. And I didn't just lock myself away - I blindfolded myself and wore weights on my arms and didn't eat until I had mastered the game. By smell and sound alone!
