April 2005 Archives
Kurt stopped by the Sealab office this morning, he saw my post about Mr. Gregory L. Dill. He had heard of ol' Greg before. In fact he had in his hands another letter from Mr. Dill. This one was addressed to Adult Swim itself. But it regarded a promo they had run with a dancing model for Aqua Teen. He wanted to know more about the "A.T.H.F. Promo Ad Dancing Model. He asked her such questions as:
"What's your name and do you take dancing?"
He apparently really is a collector of information about famous people. Also, he is apparently an artist...
The Last New Episode of Sealab 2021 premiered on Adult Swim last night. It was called Sealab 2021 A Legacy of Laughter. Mack's got some news on it. It's sad to see the show come to an end.. scary even, but my bosses have been working on the one cartoon for 5 years. I think they're ready for something new. What is that somthing new?
We'll have to wait and see.
My boss got this letter in the mail this morning:
It's entitled: Welcome to Sealab- The Live-Action Original T.V. Movie.
What is contained within it's typed sentences are a hilarious mishmash of inaccuracies, misinformation, and awkward letter writing skills. It features such gems as this:
"Who will play the part of Captain George Murphy?"
and
"I am a collector of colorful photographs and information about famous people."
I'm not 100% convinced this isn't a prank.
Scientists are mapping the gravity pools of the universe. Armed with this knowledge they may be able to create low-fuel highways using these "celestial currents" to send space craft farther with less fuel. (via metafilter)

that's rad.
I've been getting to know a group of designers and artists at a forum called Baseboard.net for the past couple years. They are all very talented, and span many disciplines. Oh, and most of them are from Europe. But that never really came up much, except in November, when us Americans embarassed ourselves again. anyway...
Recently I did a trade with Max! over at baseboard. She sent me some homemade pumpkin preserve, and I sent her a duct tape wallet. Excellent trade.
Yesterday I got a letter from her with a small gift. A handmade wallet she found at The Camden Market. It's a style I've seen around the internet a bit. It's comprised of a scrap of vinyl and some crafty sewing techniques. Natty Bumpercars made a couple similar to this for our last art show.
I love it. I need to get familiar with a sewing machine, because I believe this could be the next step in the evolution of wallets for me.
I am almost back to being a full human again.
I had only just gotten back from Philadelphia when an old friend from Art School came to visit us here in Atlanta. From one jam-packed weekend to another. There is so much to cover, I've decided not to cover any of it.
Although I will say that my dog hates Canadian Geese, Mallards, and any winged creature who dares to float near the shore of the Chattahoochee River.
Our weekend in Philly was a whirlwind. I'm having a hard time keeping it all in focus.
As I said before, my bosses were kind enough to let me go this time around to the Philadelphia Film Festival to represent Sealab 2021. I'll try to not make it sound like we had a three day party. Here goes.
Upon arriving on Friday we met up with Dana and Patrick. Dana Snyder is the voice of Master Shake on Aqua Teen. He's the kind of guy that can say anything and make it sound funny, old school kind of funny. Patrick is Dana's song writing partner. They would be hosting and performing in the Burlesque show on sat. night, but that is a story for another paragraph. Friday would see us eating Steak Sammiches at Jim's Steaks (local Philly's were horrified if you mentioned wanting to eat at Geno's...) and later after our bellies were full we went to the Mutter Museum of Medical Curiosities. This one goes out to all my two headed babies!
Also, on friday, we took a walk to Zipperhead. And yes, there were Punk Rock Girls there. Just like the song says.
Saturday we actually got to see a film being presented at the Film Festival, it was a thriller called Frozen, and I'm still not exactly sure what it was about.
That night was big Adult Swim / Burlesque show. The Burlesque portion being provided by the Peekaboo Revue, and the Adult Swim portion being provided by Dana, Ned and Jay of Aqua Teen, The 2 guys who created Venture Brothers, and Eric "The Hammer" from Tom Goes to the Mayor. It was a grueling 3 hour show, hosted by Dana who kept it entertaining and moving forward. He had the rowdy drunken Philly crowd in the palm of his hand, except when they were throwing up.
Sunday we went to a Comic Book shop so Dana could sign autographs. Like on a pair of underwear. seriously.
All in all, it was an amazing weekend. On many different levels... The Film Festival was great, and the Independent side of the festival had a lot of great people involved. It really made me appreciate Philly. I think it's been getting a bad rap for too long.
I just got back from the Philly Film Festival a few hours ago. It was very much awesome... yes.
There is too much to explain today, check back soon for full details, and some photos. See you soon!

My ears, they be ringing.
The Lyrics Born show:
Minamina Goodsong was the first group to go on. I'd stumbled onto them about 2 years, and when trying to buy their album online I even exchanged a few emails with one of the members. Their songs are clever and tight, great for a local ATL hip hop band.
There real surprise was Lyrics Born's opening band called Heiruspecs. I'd never heard of them, so I had no idea what to expect. Wow, they were great. I bought their CD immediately after their set. (restrap those eargoggles) They were backed by a full band, and it makes such a difference to have actual instruments laying the beats.
and finally Lyrics Born...
I've decided to officially start calling him The Tom Jones of Underground Hip Hop.
I've been working hard on getting some paintings done (3 out of 5 completed!) and haven't had much time to post, but I've got a few things to cover...
Friday morning I leave for Philly to attend the Philadelphia Film Festival. We still haven't gotten our itinerary from the festival, but my fellow travelers are confident it will arrive, just as they are confident we will have plane tickets to board a flight with, and a hotel room to sleep in. They've done this before, so I will simply have faith. Once there I will meet up with my old gang from Delaware, some of whom I haven't seen in years, that will be awesome.
I'll be taking an un-aired episode of Sealab to show at the festival. It's called Moby Sick, and is about a whale with inoperable whale cancer who comes to Sealab to have Quinn euthanize him. The whale is voiced by Chuck D of Public Enemy fame. I got to sit in on that recording session... That dude is super cool, and a childhood idol of mine. (he gave me his card!)
Tonight I'll be going to The Drunken Unicorn to see one of my favorite underground rappers, Lyrics Born. He first came to my attention when I heard him mashed-up with Queen on The Kleptones album A Night at the Hip Hopera. (strap on your eargoggles) He's also part of the Quannum Crew, that's the label that Blackalicious is on. Should be a good show. If you're in Atlanta, bring $10 and come on out, it'll help your street cred, but only if you buy the t-shirt and wear it on the "street."

Scrap Art - X-23 Security Robot
[acrylic and spray paint on scrap wood]
The X-23 is a standard security robot in use by most galactic institutions. It is housed in it's "pod" while it recharges it's batteries, or until it is needed for security purposes.
This is the third in this series of paintings. When I'm finished I hope to have a total of 5. My goal was to complete 1 painting each weekend, and so far I've stuck to that. However, I'll be taking the next weekend off from painting to travel up north. But after that, I should be back on track.
I've begun writing a short description on the back of these paintings describing the character featured on the front. I want each painting to almost feel like a trading card for each character.
Today I spoke on behalf of my bosses at Georgia Tech for their Monstrous Bodies Symposium celebrating "25 years of the fantastic."
In attendance with me were Jay Edwards and Ned Hastings, both of whom work as producers and editors for Aqua Teen. These are the same guys I will be going to Philly with next weekend for The Philly Film Festival. Which, from what I can tell so far, will consist of us standing around while simultaneously waving our hands. (we have no scheduled panel to speak on, we are just supposed to be "around")
Today's talk was cool and laid back. It was mostly Q&A, and at the end Jay showed the trailer to his new independent film Stomp! Shout! Scream! a beach party rock and roll movie. You can watch a trailer for it on their website. It features none other than Mary Kraft, who has been working at Dad's Garage doing improv and plays.
