January 2004 Archives
8 1/2 x 11 got another review, this time courtesy of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. Kathy Janich has nice things to say about the show, including the animation, which she goes so far as to call... "ingenious." That's nice of her.
Yesterday, I received these in the mail. Hot off the presses, a new clunkyrobot.com sticker featuring the hot-shot pilot Bindle. Show your clunky pride, send me a self addressed stamped envelope, and up to 5 of these classical black and white all purpose vinyl stickers will be yours!

The animation is up and ready for consumption. Thanks to the fine people at Woodsy Records, whose web space and bandwidth flow like a babbling brook in which we, the fine internet denizens, can dip our hands into and drink from.

Curt Holman of Creative Loafing has reviewed the entire show, and given it a positive, if not tentative, thumbs up. You can read his review here, he calls my animated short one of the more "sketchier" of the pieces, which I can't be sure isn't a bad thing. It's an enlightened review, and pretty spot on.
Printed in 1661, the Harmonia Macrocosmica is an atlas of the heavens as seen by the astronomers of the times: Copernicus, Ptolemy (the man), Brahe, and Aratus.
You can browse the 30 colored plates, like a diagram of the Copernican system, or you can read the written text, like this one that's written in an ancient mysterious foreign language...
It's this combination of art and science that really gets me going. It seems that if you wanted to map out the solar system, you needed a kick ass illustrator to do it. Someone who could draw those amazing clockwork diagrams of planets revolving around a sun with a smiling face, and historically that's where kid's got that from.

So the animation is a little wonky. The sound is still off for some reason, and it's driving me crazy. I feel the need to have something in the books for today that actually works the way it's supposed to. And there is little-to-no way i can screw up a desktop...
can I?
WORKing for a better now.

Swarm23 is a drawing project I started years ago, it's only theme is drawing on paper. This is the first in a series of desktops from that project.

"The animation will be up by monday"
and this statement is true, if by "monday" I mean tuesday.
This web streaming stuff is more complicated than I had first anticipated.
So in lieu of actually getting anything done on my end, check out the new Ape Infinitum. The website of C.A. He's a self-publisher, and part-time photographer.
Also I received my first 2 sticker requests in the mail this weekend. One from Pod-six.net, a Sealab fan site, and one from a mysterious address in MA.
Thanks guys, your stickers are in the mail.

Now that this animation business has concluded...
The brave crew of the Space Station Sagittarius Kaleidoscope can return to it's normal routine of creating desktops and t-shirts. Oh, and also exploring the universe.
Here's a desktop to ease us all back into the groove. Whad'ya say?

This is a short film written and directed by a friend I went to Art School with. It's about the rise and fall of a dot.com executive. It's funny, in a dry, depressing, gross sort of way.
"Do you have your customer's relationships managed the way you'd like? If not then... What the fuck?"
That's funny.
and true.
watch it.

to celebrate, here is a new desktop titled:

My eyes are bleeding from After Effecting.
So, maybe I don't really see this, maybe it's the blood:
Johnny Rotten to appear in reality show.
Boo. The poor man's Surreal Life. Boo.
Punk Rock is Dead, Long Live Punk.
A reminder.
8 1/2 x 11 [Punk Rock will Never Die] the short play festival at Dad's Garage Theatre Comapny opens Jan 23rd. This includes the clunkyrobot.com animated short What is Punk Rock?

Ah, ok. I have one more day's worth of work on the animation and it will be squared away. I can see the light, and it is in the shape of a Nintendo Gamecube, for that is what I shall be playing when responsibility leaves my doorstep. Shoo responsibility.. go back where you came from.
In the mean time, I got this from Jonolith:
Their rendition of the Castlevania theme is really good, complete with background music from the levels, sweet.
They have a great t-shirt. Designed by David Rees of Get your War On, and My Fighting Technique is Unstoppable. Two funny, post-modern, cut and pastey kind of web comic strips.
thanks Jonolith.
While putting together the images for this animation I am working on, the whole look of the project took an unexpected left turn. I submit this new desktop to you. What is Punk Rock, brown style.
I've been too busy to post any new desktops, however I plan on putting up a new What is Punk desktop tomorrow. In the mean time, go straight to preshaa.
The Preshaa is an illustrator from London UK. He dropped out of the web design business to concentrate on getting his Masters in Illustration. That is pretty admirable, and an awesome conversation starter.
His drawings are inspiring, they make me want to be a better illustrator. I especially like how he combines a realistic style with a very cartoony edge.

While the clunky robot has been avoiding doing the HUGE amount of work he should be doing, he has been doing these things instead:
(by sharing them with you, it somehow makes my procrastination seem ok, thanks)
Viewtiful Joe
I borrowed this game from my friend Matt. At first glance it simply looks like a weird japanese port. Complete with confusing name. When in actuality I believe it to be a purposeful and deliberate attempt at being originally-classic. It's super fun.
Ben Folds, Ben Lee, and Ben Kweller make up The Bens. Who recently embarked on a tour of Australia. They recorded 4 exclusive tracks to be played on the tour. Those tracks were previously only sold on an EP available only on tour.
iTunes has recently put the EP up for sale for $3.96. (direct to iTunes URL) Nice.
This was passed along to me by a good friend.

From the website of Michio Kaku a Theoretical Physicist and "co-founder" of String
Theory, I've heard Michio talk on Art Bell's classic late night conspiracy and science talk-radio show Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell. Which is now hosted by George Noory.
Michio gives a very simple and elegant metaphor for understanding that there are certainly more dimensions that we can readily see, and there is a real possibility of us someday seeing or experiencing them. But will we ever understand them? I would speculate that we cannot ever fully understand them, because we are simply 3 dimensional beings, we are built to only understand those 3 dimensions. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be trying, or that someday maybe we won't be 4 dimensional beings, or 5 dimensional... or even 11 dimensional.
Michio is also the man who has given the coolest description of superstring theory I've heard so far, he says:
"superstring theory is 21st Century physics that fell accidentally into the 20th century "
His point is that we have not yet invented the physics needed to fully understand superstring theory.

Bush is slated to announce a manned Mission to Mars, and a permanent human presence on the Moon...
Men on Mars
Colonies on the Moon.
That is awesome. Is it possible? The White house speculates maybe within a decade. A decade from now we may have men on Mars... We may have a mining facility on the Moon.
Here is the thing...
Even though this is clearly an election time ploy for the nerd vote, it is still motivating. I would rally behind a declaration of such importance, of such scope and dignity. Because even if we do figure out a way to live on this planet without sucking it dry like a million tiny flea sized vampires, the planet will still be eaten alive by an exploding sun someday. It is vital, to human survival, that we figure out a way to live in space. Maybe these kind of mega-long term goals are too much for americans to latch onto. Maybe not.
Of course the conspiracy theorists will have to admit that the Moon DOES actually exist.

The guys at homestar were kind enough to ask me to make some homestar OS X Icons. The first set is up, and I hope to make some more for them. They are the nicest people in the whole world to work with, officially.

Is a comic strip drawn and edited by Maria Schneide. It started as a strip hosted on The Onion, now the strips live on their own website. The best part is that all the stories are of us, you send in your embarrassing stories of growing up a geek, like the time a popular guy did something mean to you, or the time someone did something horrible to you on the bus, or the time you did something terrible to yourself and everyone saw. Some are funny, some are heartbreaking, but all of them are genuine, and exactly what being an awkward kid was like.
After reading a lot of them, I feel a sort of resigned sad solidarity. I also wonder about how we torture ourselves... How some moments of our past have such a enormous impact, and how some, that are just as embarrassing, simply fade away. What part of us determines which horribly embarrassing moment is the one that is going to help define who we are?
Who am I to say?
or...
more importantly, who am I NOT to say.
It is very difficult to approach this without a large amount of cynicism, so why don't I just embrace it right? I think that by defining what Punk Rock is (notice the capitalization) you automatically miss most of the point. So that is my mission, to miss most of the point. I can proudly say that I complete this mission almost every day. In honor of completing my mission I present the first in a series of What is Punk Rock desktops.
Long before Team Clunky knew they were a team, long before the space station had been christened the Sagittarius Kaleidoscope. Team Clunky had another incarnation. They were simply a set of icons. For posterity's sake we present you now with original OS X icons. You may recognize some of your old friends, and you may meet some new ones along the way. For example, watch out for Bon Soir Bullet, scourge of the seven galaxies. He's got a scar!

XP icons may be available soon, but don't hold your breath, I'd have to reverse engineer them.
Welcome to the new year.
The clunkyrobot has been super busy.
I've returned from the tundra of the frozen north. Or michigan, which wasn't all that cold. But cold enough. For me. There is much on the horizon for the clunkyrobot, we are producing an animated short for the play festival: 8 1/2 X 11, at Dad's Garage Theatre Company. Eight and a half short plays all done in under 11 minutes. This year the theme for the annual play festival is, "Punk Rock will never die." Which I am sure, pretty much means punk is dead, or dying, or both. Long live punk, punk is dead.
We'll be posting the animation on this website (whatispunk.clunkyrobot.com), or go see it live, on tape, in the theatre Jan 23rd. Also, look for corrisponding desktops and t-shirts as well.
We have stickers!

want some?
send me a self addressed stamped envelope and I'll send you up to 5 free stickers.
